The Story
NASA Rocket Launches at Wallops Island, Virginia. This is the rocket which was launched last night at Wallops Island, Virginia, carrying aloft a 100-foot aluminum covered balloon satellite. The National Aeronautics and Space Agency, which released this photograph today in Washington, said it was made an hour prior to the launching. The first stage of the rocket is a Sergeant with two Recruit Rocket attached to its side to assist in the liftoff. The upper, second, stage is a X-248 rocket. The payload is enclosed in a 26 1/2-inch sphere in the nose cone. The entire system is 32 1/2 feet tall and weighs 5 1/2 tons.
